The Amazing Temple "Borobudur"

"Bandung" More Than Paris Van Java

Bandung is the capital of West Java in Indonesia. Bandung is 180 kilometers southeast from Jakarta. Although it has a population of over two million the pace of city life is slower than Jakarta's. Today Bandung has a population of 2 million people, Bandung area an estimated 4 million. Bandung is situated on a plateau 768 meters above sea level with a cool climate throughout the year. Bandung is the most European city of Java.

The raining season starts in Bandung a little bit earlier, then the rest of Indonesia. Normally the raining season in Indonesia is from October till May, the peak of the raining season is in January. The dry season is from June until August, temperature is then 25-30 degrees Celsius during the day.

In the morning, the sun is almost shining every day, but in the afternoon many times it gets cloudy, for sunbathing we have to wake up early from 6.30 the sun is already there. In the evening when the sun is down the temperature has drops. The average temperature in Bandung is 22 degrees Celsius; the weather is pleasant all year round.

There are short drives up to the mountain resorts of Lembang and the Bosscha Observatory, and higher to the volcanic crater of Tangkuban Perahu, the only crater in Java accessible all the way by car as far as its rim. It is an awe-inspiring sight of emanating sulfur fumes. Descent into all the volcano's 12 craters is only possible with the aid of an experienced guide, because of the presence of suffocating gases at certain spots. Just a 15 minutes drive from Tangkuban Perahu is a hot springs resort. Here we can swim in warm mineral water pools, good for healing skin problems. The resort provides visitors with a bar, restaurants, tennis courts and cottage style hotels overlooking a beautiful mountain-scope.

Bandung Weather

Due to its topology, climate in Bandung is relatively cooler throughout the year than most of Indonesian cities. The average annual rainfall ranges from 1,000 milimetres in the middle and the southeast region to 3,500 milimetres in the north of the city. The wet season conforms with other Indonesian regions, around November to April. The average temperature is 22.6°C, cooler than most Indonesian cities.

Bandung Places to visit

There are many things to do in Bandung and it is not short of attractions to see. Many locals will recommend going there for shopping, food and cool respite. It is a popular weekend destination for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of Jakarta. Many travelers would say they have their best Indonesian experience here.

Here the food is cheap and delicious, the things are cheap and in huge variety and important Indonesian attractions are nearby. Therefore, it is no surprise that the whole place evolved around tourism industry so come here and have fun.

SHOP IN FACTORY OUTLETS
I am not exaggerating here, nobody goes back from Bandung empty handed. Especially if you go to the factory outlets at Jl Riau or Jl Dago, you will find all the hidden gems of quality clothes, shoes, bags and all else in various famous brands. All the items you find here are in good condition, brand new but in half the price!

CATCH SUNSET AT THE VALLEY
If you are looking for another option to dine and something special to do in Bandung, you can choose to go to The Valley for dinner. This Western restaurant is located at a hilltop with amazing sunset view. The food is good too, so enjoy your meal while watching the sunset over Bandung city.

EAT AT KAMPUNG DAUN
One of the Bandung’s best restaurant, many tourists come here for the relaxing ambiance with bamboo huts, streams, and waterfall. Food is not especially delicious but it is extensive and inexpensive. Come here for the overall experience of enjoying Indonesian cuisine in a comfortable and serene outdoor setting.

GET LOST IN PASAR BARU
This epitome of Indonesian market in Bandung, you can get lost here and find all sorts of things that delight you. Travelers come here to source for fabrics and souvenirs. Prices here are unbelievable too especially if you have special bargaining skills. Though do take care of your belongings as this place is really crowded.

ENJOY THE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE AT SAUNG ANGKLUNG UDJO
This traditional musical performance is one of the best way to explore Indonesian culture. It is a 2 hour show of several parts including puppet show, mask dance, Angklung performance and dances with little kids. Watch the performance and maybe also participate in an Angklung workshop, they are bound to delight.

WALK OFF THE BEATEN PATH IN SEARCH OF RICE TERRACES
How can one come to Asia and not be awed by towering rice terraces. Unknown to many, Bandung actually do have rolling rice fields and some rice terraces in the highlands. Bribe a local to tell you the location is and head there for a soul refreshing time. There’s one apparently in Ciwidey!

KAWAH PUTIH
Definitely in the top of the list of attractions for its stunningly beautiful lake as if set out of a movie. It is 2 hours away from Bandung city center and in the highland but it is worth to do. The place is cooling but beware of sunburn as it is still really sunny here without feeling it. This is a sulphuric lake as it comes from a volcano. The entire area can be explored in 30 minutes. Many people come here either by car hire or through a Kawah Putih, Bandung Tour.

TANGKUBAN PERAHU
About 1.5 hours from Bandung, it is yet another crater from a volcano in Indonesia that is worth the visit for the sheer awe of the view from the top. This may be second best to Kawah Putih but still worth to visit.

VILLA ISOLA
Built by an Italian millionaire and perched at the northern part of Bandung, Villa Isola overlooks a breathtaking view of the city to the south. This is one tourist attractions not to be missed. There are also cool places to stay nearby Villa Isola

GEDUNG SATE AND THE VIEW
Built and used by the Dutch companies, it is popular for its satay food decoration. It has 6 ornaments symbolizing 6 million guldens. Now it is used as the office for West Java governor. Luckily, the place is open to public and don’t forget to have a good chill and drink at the top floor while overlooking the city.

GEDUNG MERDEKA
Another architectural wonder built for the rich previously and then made famous for hosting the first Asian-African conference. Though not much of an attraction but worth to take a look if you are nearby.

DUSUN BAMBU
Why is it one of the best things to do in Bandung, Indonesia?
A relaxing family leisure park at the foot of the mountain with very inspiring, sublime and truly remarkable picturesque surroundings. Gigantic bamboo structure welcomes you at the main gate and a fancy-dancy floral shuttle will bring you to the main area of the park. Along the way, you will see verdant greens with fascinating bamboo walking paths.

Try a unique dining experience on Dusun Bambu’s hanging nests, the “Lutung Kasarung” and let the cool mountain breeze touch the warmth of your cheeks while having a satisfying meal at the tree top. Or move to a higher altitude of Cafe Burangrang, a more jaw-dropping view of the relaxing nature, the calm man-made lake and scenic view of the Burangrang mountain. A close touch with nature, sharing the sweetness of life with the family, Dusun Bambu is truly one of the best things to do in Bandung, Indonesia. Dusun Bambu is located in Kolonel Masturi KM 11 Cisarua, Bandung Barat.

KARTIKASARI
You’re not good if you bring imported chocolates or liquor from Bandung. They are boring. In fact the Husein Sastranegara airport won’t provide you this kind of souvenirs. The airport is super small, you know. Haha.

Then if you come to Bandung and want to bring home some memories, please consider Kartika Sari. Try Molen Keju, Brownies Kukus, or its Plain Brownies. I’m pretty sure you will then think of a second coming.

TAMAN WISATA MARIBAYA
Known as the home of Curug Maribaya, Taman Wisata Maribaya is located just north of Taman Hutan Raya. The park is easily accessed through Lembang, but there is also a walkway from Taman Hutan Raya.

Getting to the Maribaya waterfall is a joy itself; walking through the forest treks while breathing in the fresh mountain air is a great way to rejuvenate the body and mind.

Upon reaching the waterfall, visitors can even feel the water droplets as it cools the skin, and bask in its refreshing scent.

To rest your tired legs after a day of trekking, the Taman Wisata Maribaya also offers natural hot spring pools, which is believed to cure skin diseases.

FOLATING MARKET , LEMBANG
If you’ve been to Thailand before, do you love its floating market? You can find one too in Bandung!
Enjoy a wide selection of traditional Indonesian food served from small boats with a beautiful view of a lake. For those looking for western dishes, the Rockpool serves pizza and pasta within the vicinity.
You can also do various activities, such as the usual ATV and paddle boat rides, swan feeding, or visit the cactus garden and stone garden. Do look out for the European house and the miniature train set – it takes up to 10 minutes to go a whole round!

SITU PATENGGANG
Just 10 minutes away from the well-known ‘Kawah Putih’ lies a lake that you would definitely regret to miss.

Legend claims that Prince Putra Prabu of 15th Century West Java and Putri Titisan Dewi met in a heart-shaped island in the middle of Situ Patenggang, after being separated for years due to the difference in their beliefs.

The surrounding view is purely breathtaking – tea plantations circle the area, so it looks as though someone had spread a green wool rug across the landscape.

CIWIDEY
Brought to Bandung by the Dutch during the colonial era, berries, most commonly strawberries, are discovered to grow well in Bandung.

As a result, the roads leading to Lembang and Ciwidey are abundant with strawberry plantations that guests can come and harvest themselves.

The ‘Natural Resto and Strawberry Land’ offers 1.5 ha of strawberry fields in the Lembang countryside, all grown using organic fertilizers.

Besides strawberry picking, the restaurant has also been featured in multiple television shows, shedding light to its strawberry-themed menu.

The ‘Gourame Goreng Strawberry’ and ‘Nasi Liwet Strawberry’ are two must-try dishes here!

There you have it, the best of what Bandung have to offer in terms of things to do and attractions to see. You will be amazed how you can enjoy yourself so much without actually really spending a lot, especially good for budget travelers who are backpacking in Indonesia, though carrying a lot of things after the shopping is another story altogether
